I've probably mentioned this before, but ....

My late father was a boy sailor in WW2, as a Petty Officer Radio Mechanic. One of his duties as an officer was to measure out the rum ration; often there was a bit left over. He was left in no doubt whatever that, if he followed regulations and tipped said bit over the side, he'd follow the rum.
