The photos, by Robert Yellin, in Guy and Candie Carawan's book 'Ain't you got a right to the tree of life', a snapshot of the people of Johns Island, South Carolina, alone are well worth seeking out the book - and the stories and songs are great too. But the authors note that they deliberately refrained from caricaturing the Gullah dialect by distorted spellings.
