That was so interesting, Allan!Serviceberries/ Saskatoon berries...are good to eat right off the tree, or on ice cream...they are a bit seedy, but tasty when eaten raw. My 13 year old likes to go out picking them for a dessert, but the container doesn't get as many as she eats off the tree. I tried to make muffins out of them once....it wasn't really worth it. Birds love serviceberries, too.
This is a great little urban tree. We live on a small Toronto property, and with 1 huge maple tree, 3 serviceberry trees, plus a lot of bushes such as flowering currants, dogwoods, Arrowwood...we don't feel crowded.
I feel like I've joined a gardening forum....
