I was taught in Hebrew class in college that "in vain" translates "l'shuv" or literally, "for nothing." "Shuv" ("nothing") was also a euphemism for magic or witchcraft. Hence, the commandment COULD be parsed as a prohibition of using the Lord's name in incantations. I don't know how accurate this is; I simply report what I was taught.
