Apparently Roy Rogers sang it in two movies, "Hollywood Canteen" and "Don't Fence Me In." Details here. Gene Autry had the chart hit. Bing Crosby recorded it with the Andrews Sisters (also in "Hollywood Canteen"). I've seen a tape of Bing singing it solo on a TV show, but I don't know if he released a solo recording. The above link refers to a poem written by Robert Fletcher as the source for the song's lyrics. I haven't found the actual poem yet to see if it might have the verse karen asked about.
