Unless (and I'm not saying this is the way "Bill" wrote it) the singer is referring to one specific pine in the forest (maybe the one with the heart carved on it with the initials inside) - then wouldn't it be "tall pine grows" ? - it would sure rhyme better with "rose".

We have these fun little arguments all the time in my group. Especially about country western & cowboy songs, which never seem to match singular & plurals correctly. Like.. "with foot in my stirrups I gallop away..." etc.
