Subject: RE: Remarkable find on CSS Hunnely
I have been following and supporting the Hunley project for some time now. Wife and I are members of Friends of the Hunley. There were many exciting finds in the sub. Did you know that besides Lt Dixon's coin, the lantern which was used to signal the successful completion of the mission to those on shore was also found? Several pipes and bottles, uniform parts, (fabric and buttons), and most important ALL of the crews remains have been recovered. I am already planning my next years vacation to coincide with the interment of the crew at Magnolia Cemetery along side the other two crews lost in the Hunley. A very interesting piece of history has finally arrived home!!

Incidentaly the back of the twenty dollar gold piece which was given Lt Dixon by his sweetheart was inscribed 'SHILOH, April 6, 1862, My life preserver, G.E.D.' (Lt Dixon's initials). Just imagine a TWENTY dollar gold piece being carried (as a good luck charm) by a soldier in a period when the average soldiers MONTHLY pay was just $13.00!!
