I don't know a lot about this song, only what I have picked up here. I do remember an old man telling me that the Carrickfergus in the song is actually in Kilkenny. and is not the one in Antrim. I have looked all over for verification but can find none. Maybe it was a small place eaten up by a larger expanding town. Any old maps of Kilkenny around ?. Or any Mudcatters from Kilkenny ?.
