Emmylou Harris has an amusing remark in her interview in Acoustic Guitar this month (See other thread). She says that one reason why she has a snazzy guitar (Gibsons mostly) is that people will think she must be a great player even though as a rhythm guitarist she will be mostly doing I-IV-Vs to accompany her singing. (I am not putting this forward as advice, just reporting!)
