I've seen him everyday for nearly 19 years at his little kiosk outside the subway entrance, selling everything from newspapers, magazines, candy, to chewing gum. Thin and lanky, he wears his life on his well-lined face and that grey suede cap pulled down practically over those peering, inquisitive eyes. Always scratching something down on a pad and making cellphone calls in between customers. Course years ago he'd just duck into the payphone next door. Finally a black Mercedes limo arrives just as he's closing and the driver says "All done then for the day, Mr. Milken?"
