It was popular when I was in Junior High School, and was part of a long disappeared garage band music culture along with other, better known, but slightly less bizarre songs like "Woolly Bully" and "96 Tears"(why am I telling you, you had to have been there!)--Oddly enough, I still remember most of the melody and chords, except the "I found it in a tree" part--for some reason they never play it on the oldies stations--
