As I gazed at my lusterous, shining, newly aquired, thrice inscribed bowling trophy I couldn't help pondering my last visit to Smoot Tennesee, Population 617. I wondered whether 617 was one word or, as six hundred and seventeen, four words. Usually a trivial distinction, it would matter in this challenge.

What could I do? Consult my magic 8 ball?

Not much help. I'll post a story and get fellow mudcatters' reactions. I could just count the words in the previous posts which include numbers. I feel I will get the definative answer from some proud pedant.
