There is a folkways album of Dillard Chandler, with liner notes by John Cohen, giving the history of the song; unfortunately, I pitched my copy (so it's not Fokways Record FA2309, which I still have). If I recall correctly, it pretty much jibes with what Lynn W. says, i.e., fairly old but not traditional. However, her clickie seems not to work.
