A regional "hillbilly" group called "The Ark Valley Boys" used to do a version of this song so sanitized that my first recollection of hearing it was at a children's Christmas party - sometime about 1944. As I recall it, the group's commedian, "Cuzin Clarence" did the part of the "Fair Young Maiden," but I don't recall who sang the "Barnacle Bill" lyric.

Just a bit of nostalgia.
