MAV: the eighty year old guy in Maine, my father ( a bunch of people at a bus stop were watching as these animals beat him up) and sundry other cases. Seems that what happened to Kitty Genovese never taught anybody anything. I was recently in London and was walking near the british museum with two of my students. This old bloke was lying on the floor going blue in the face, he was obviously a street person, but he was also obviously having a fit, people were walking by on the other side of the road just to avoid him. "Can yer call an ambulance mate?"he croaked and so I did on my cell phone. As I was waiting for the paramedics with him, several people came up to me and said what a great thing I had done. Some of these people I had seen walk by this old chap. I didn't feel the hero, and I certainly didn't do anything more than should've been done. But I couldn't help but feel a little disgusted at the attitude of my fellow human beings.
