There has been this boxer analogy: wearing down the opponent round to round. I submit that the ultimate aim is to knock the opponent out so they can't come back. The longer you go toe-to-toe, the greater your chance of being knocked out yourself.

People ultimately tolerate their government, therefore they are responsible for the actions of their government. If they are dissatisfied they will topple it. They could always ask for help, rather than wait for clergy to decide for them.
