Thread Name: Origins: Lily the Pink - Winke Winke
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lilly the pink?
Strange though it may seem, there are songs which did not emanate from Ireland! I remember my late father, who was otherwise totally uninterested in the popular music of the time, hearing "Lily the Pink" when the Scaffold version was in the charts. He proceeded to sing to me a bawdy rendition which may have been a version of the RAC song cited by Micca, although he was in the Artillery during WW2, so there were no doubt variations. Alas, I didn't record or write down the words at the time.

I suspect it may have had music hall roots, on either side of the pond. (cf "Uncle Joe's Mint Balls" and "Handier Household Help")

The sheet music I have of "Lily the Pink" says "Words and music adapted and arranged by Gorman, McGear and McGough", (DT Songid=3598) so that doesn't help much, unless we can trace it back through either of those three. For the benefit of younger readers, Mike McGear's real name was Mike McCartney, brother of the more famous Paul.
