It would seem that the widely beloved children's book author needed a quick name change because of some illicit booze he was caught with during Prohibition!

He was at Dartmouth and editor of the school's humour magazine when a room check turned up a bottle of gin in his quarters. The Grinch in charge of the place decreed that he should be booted from the magazine as punishment for imbibing.

Outwitting the authorities, the young man took his middle name, Seuss, as his last name and stayed on the publication.

In later life he promoted himself to 'Dr.', a title that Dartmouth subsequently conferred upon him officially with an honorary doctorate in 1957. Wonder if they returned his gin?!
