I'm with you on your above.

A lot of things that people do are fun in the practice threads, but have no real place in the "business" of mudcat. Thankfully, I haven't seen much of the "weird stuff" creeping into normal threads. Hope it stays that way.

I've been limiting myself to the characters defined/named in the html spec. I've found that some of them don't work here, for me at least; and some others may bounce for other people.

The html spec is written in terms of creating an entire, new web page/document. We aren't doing that here. We are merely editing an existing page.

We need to live with the rules that come with the existing document. They're good enough to do what we need to do, but some of them are a little vague (to me at least).
