What you see on your computer seems to depend on what default font is set on your viewer. Most people with Windows will have pretty much the same setup unless they have gone in and changed something.

If you copy from the viewer and paste into a Word document, sometimes Word can show you what a "mystery" character is, since it seems to have a better setup for substituting fonts.

One of my thoughts when I put the stuff up above is that maybe people can post what they see and what they don't, so we can have an idea which notes to play to make better music - for all of us.

As to fonts, something in the Times/TimesRoman etc is usually safe. Most fonts in this group have about the same characters. If you don't like serifs, try an Arial/Helvetica.

Those are pretty universal, so usually they'll have nearly all the normal characters. When you go to some of the fancy fonts, you'll sometimes find some missing.

In Windows, you can look at the Character Map (Key Caps in Mac, I think). It will show you all of the normal characters contained in a font. If you see a lot of those little blank rectangles in a font on CharMap, I'd pick a different font for general use.
