Subject: RE: BS: When do they set clocks back in the UK
...well, ladyP, looks like the gremlins have got us for sure on this thread!

As I was trying to say, in 1973 during the vaunted ENERGY CRISIS, the US tried to go to Daylight Savings Time all year round. It was a disaster.

As far as I know, the US started the clock shift not during the Great War, but during WWII. I remember seeing magazines from the 40s that mentioned "Eastern War Time". And I belive that fuel savings was the original impetus for the change.

Here in Hawaii, of course, we can't tell the seasons apart, so we don't do Daylight Savings Time. So the calculation of "what time is it on the Mainland?" keeps changing. Right now, my daughter in Colorado is 3 hours later than I am, my friends in Seattle are 2 hours later, Mudcat time is 5 hours later, and GMT is 10 hours later. And we won't even talk about Australia.

Did anybody besides me wonder as a child how the earth knew to slow down or speed up when the time changed?

Aloha,
Mark
