Way up there somewhere in the thread, Cas asked, "Now what do you do if you have NEVER sung before???"

I'm not sure how to interpret the question (which, of course, affects the answer!): do you mean "if you have never sung at the particular folk club before", "if you have never sung at any folk club before", "if you have never sung in public with everyone else listening before" or "if you have never sung any song in your life before, even alone in the shower"?
