I know that you are at least half right Mr S. Doug! While I can just hear Phil Coulter doing a master's job in the playing of it, it is, I think a traditional Border counties tune [played a lot on the Northumbrian pipes]. I doubt, however, that the lyrics were by Burns. Not that I have any idea exactly of the origin, but I've never seen them included in any collection of Burns' work."The Rowan Tree"[ "mountain ash"--but who the hell would sing about that?!?] was, and is, a popular song throughout Borders society in Scotland.
