Kat, thank you for the advice. I think that I will write that letter.

When I started this thread I did it to share my sadness and that poem. I have been amazed and comforted by how encouraging and open the responses have been. But I think the most amazing thing is how my poem, which will always be Tom's poem, has touched so many. If a poem can unite us in grief and help us all to recall those who have "rounded the corner" before us then I think that there is nothing greater that we can ask.
