i sometimes use my thumb to catch the f chord and so on up the neck, cause that gives your wrist a break from barre chords and sometimes it is more beneficial to use the thumb, you can also use your thumb for the minor inversion of the f chord also, and move that up the neck for different positions. i just love guitar.
