Thread Name: Origins: As Time Goes By
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: As Time Goes By
I found this on the JustJazz board at Yahoo and decided to post it here in case there is interest. The chord notation uses the jazz conventions where a minus sign indicates minor and a small circle “o” indicates diminished.

I've taken the trouble to make the first few chords clickable in order to show possible fingerings for a descending rhythm line. There is a problem with the F#o7 diagram though. I've indicated the fingering as (string-fret) 6-2,5-X,4-1,3-2,2-1,1-X but the Online Guitar Chord Dictionary at the University of Virginia doesn't seem to honor that fingering for F#o7, I'm not sure why.

The post refers to “The Real Book” which is a popular jazz fake book. For more detail on theory, refer to the thread Scared of Music theory? Faggggedaboudit! which includes a wealth of information including detailed explanations by Gary T.

AS TIME GOES BY
Here is an analysis and slight reharm of As Time Goes By by Herman
Hupfield. Known to millions from the film Casablanca. Comments and
corrections requested. Illegal Real Book 1 version.

A section:
F-7...Bb7| Bb-6...Bb7|Eb6...F-7|F#o7...G-7|
F7.......|F-7.....Bb7|EbM7.....|F-7....Bb7|

Bridge:
AbM7....|C7.....|F-......|Ao....|
C-...Ab7|F7....|Bb7...Bbo|Bb7...|

Key of Eb, AABA structure. The A sections are very similar.

Bars 1-4:
|ii....V7.|V-7.....V7.|I.....ii7|viio/iii...iii7|
|F-7...Bb7| Bb-6...Bb7|Eb6...F-7|F#o7........G-7|

Bar 2 contains a V-7, borrowed from Eb minor.
Bar 4 has a dim chord which functions as a dominant and is the
equivalent of D7b9 leading to the G-7. This movement is found in many
tunes e.g Have you met Miss Jones.

Bars 5-8
V7/V7.....|ii7.....V7.|I........|ii7....V7.|
|F7.......|F-7.....Bb7|EbM7.....|F-7....Bb7|

The F7 in bar 5 is a secondary dominant (of Bb7).

Bars 17-20:
IVM7....|V/ii...|ii7.....|viio/iii|
AbM7....|C7.....|F-......|Ao......|

Bar 20 has an Ao which I think should be spelt F#o as the logical
bass note is F# here. It is functioning as a dominant F7b9, pointing
to C-.

Bars 21-24:
vi7..IV7|V7/V7.|V7....vo.|V7
C-...Ab7|F7....|Bb7...Bbo|Bb7...|

I am not sure about the dim chord in bar 23. It could be the
equivalent of A7b9 which would be a modified tritone sub for Eb7, or
simply a passing chord as in "Spring is here". Can someone (Bert?)
clarify this?

I think these Real Book changes are a bit static, and are not the way
I remember the song's being played (although it is a long time since
I saw Casablanca). Here are some suggestions:

Bars 1-4:
|ii....V7.|V-7.....V7.|I.....ii7|#iio...iii7|
|F-7...Bb7| Bb-6...Bb7|Eb6...F-7|F#o7...G-7|

Here I would add a Eo with the pickup note before bar 1 (i.e. where
he sings "You"). In bar 2, I would add bass notes of Db and D to lead
into the Eb of bar 3. The Bb-6 in bar 2 could be replaced by a Bbo.
So we have:

viio/ii|ii....V7.|vo......V7....|I.....ii7|#iio...iii7|
Eo.....|F-7...Bb7|Bbo/Db...Bb7/D|Eb6...F-7|F#o7...G-7|

Bars 5-8
V7/V7.....|ii7.....V7.|I........|ii7....V7.|
|F7.......|F-7.....Bb7|EbM7.....|F-7....Bb7|

Here I would precede the F7 in bar 5 with Fo, and maybe add a Eo to
bar 7 to make more harmonic movement.

viio/iii..V7/V7|ii7.....V7.|I...viio/ii|ii7....V7.|
|Fo..........F7|F-7.....Bb7|EbM7..Eo...|F-7....Bb7|

Bars 17-24:
IVM7....|V/ii...|ii7.....|viio/iii..|
AbM7....|C7.....|F-......|Ao........|

vi7..IV7|V7/V7.|V7....vo.|V7
C-...Ab7|F7....|Bb7...Bbo|Bb7...|

I hear an irresistible bass line here (from bar 19: f,f#,g,ab,a,b,bb,
so have modified some chords to include it. Also added a F-7 in bar
24:

AbM7.....|C7.........|F-.......|F#o....|
G-7...Ab7|F7/A..B7b13|Bb7...Bbo|F-7...Bb7 Eo|

The F#o is the Ao renamed. The G-7 is C-7/G. The B7b13 is a tritone
sub of F7, with a b13 to accomodate the note g in the melody. The Eo
is on the last beat, leading back to F-7.

Regards

John

I'm not really qualified to comment too much on this,
but I've often heard, and would play,
the first 2 bars of the A section as

| F-7 Bb7| Ab-(6) Bb7(13) |...

or

| F-7 Bb7| Abo Bb7 |...

i.e. with what I think of
as a "double-minor" in the second bar.
