Joe and Dale, thanks for the info on Campbellite. I was not aware of the term. The version that I am most familiar with is Jody Stecher's and he most definitely sings 'Carmelite'. However, he says he got it from a Seattle mandolinist, Jerry Mitchell, who in turn had it from the Skillet Lickers recording. Listening to the Skillet Lickers, Gid sings 'Campbellite' so either Jody or his mate are as ignorant as I. Indeed, it did strike me that a monk was a little out of place in that company.
