Lyrics here, some info about the song here.
"TWENTY-one years ago, young Limerick musician, Denis Allen, was asked to write a song for a new festival. That song, Limerick You're A Lady, went on to become the city's unofficial anthem. JIMMY WOULFE talks to the man who is still striking all the right chords.
It was meant that his great friend, Tommy Drennan, would record it, as he had done with many other of Denis' compositions. However, when that plan had to be altered, Denis decided to kick on and record it himself."(excerpt)
Lyrics:
LIMERICK YOU'RE A LADY
Dennis Allen
Limerick, you're a lady,
Your Shannon waters
Tears of joy that flow,
The beauty that surrounds you I'll take it with me, love, where'er I go.
While waking the arms of distant waters,
a new day finds me far away from home.
And, Limerick, you're my lady,
The one true love that I have ever known.
As children you and I spent endless days of fun
in Winter's snow or summer's golden sun.
We fished in silver streams,
The fabric of our dreams
Was fashioned by your loveliness,
and so I have to say:
Limerick, you're a lady etc
The difference time has made
To travellers on their way,
Seeking out the beauty of our lands.
At shrines the children play
And bells ring out to say
Thank God, we're living
Just to feel the freedom of each new day.
Limerick, you're a lady etc.
