Paul, when I was a child in Catholic school, one of the first things we were taught was the ten commandments, and that worship belongs to God alone. Prayers that are addressed to saints are not worshiping the saint, but simply asking them to pray to God for us. Statues and pictures, as noted in an earlier post, are simply reminders of people through history who lived extraordinary lives. Asking someone to pray to God for you doesn't mean you are worshiping them instead of God. As the nuns taught me, it is a sin to worship anyone or anything except God.
