In February 1979, Good Vibrations Records released a 4-track e.p. called "Battle Of The Bands". Three punkish bands – Rudi, The Outcasts and The Idiots – and one bunch of very straight, moustache-touting lachakoes, called "The Spiderz".The cheap artwork which graced the fold-out cover included the question "Who are the spidermen?".
Shortly after, people of a punky persuasion began referring to those who were "non-aligned" (in a musical sub-tribe sense) as "spidermen", "spidies" or "spides".
