It funny you mentioned stuffing a sock in it. That is one of a few suggestions, albeit the least violent, that I have heard from my better half when I'm practicing.

Actually, you've given me an idea. I eventually want to try some old timey frailing. I was given a starter banjo recently, I might experiment with it, starting with taking the resonator off.
