As Amergin says, the Uninstall under add/remove programs will revert to either a previous version, or to a default version of IE. For Win98, I believe the default is IE5.01.

Windows uninstall will not (but never say never) leave you without some version of IE - because, as Microsoft says, components of IE are tied into non-network functions of Windows.

For most problems, simply reinstalling - with or without removing an existing version - should be sufficient, although the install program may belch and quit if you try to replace with something older than what you currently have.

The only situation I've found where you need to do a full (manual) uninstall of IE is (sometimes) to setup the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) that's built into Windows since Win98. After you run "Uninstall IE," manual deletion of some 30 or so files may be required, depending on your setup, followed by reinstallation of critical parts or IE to make Windows work right again. Don't go there if you don't really have to - and I'd strongly urge that you have the Windows install CD handy if you do.

Poking around the Knowledge Base - with a search on your symptoms, is fairly likely to find an answer to any problems, and you may find that you don't really need that re-install.
