I hate to bring this one up, since I am a stalwart defender of my state - but this story exemplifies the stupidity of some of our Texas bureaucrats and educators. The link here to the local Dallas paper puts the story in its best light.

The long and short of it is this: a young man who spent the weekend with his father moving his grandmother and her belongings, accidentally left a bread knife in the back of his pick up truck - a non-sharpened, non-serrated edge knife used for buttering bread. The school security guard found the knife, the principal and school superintendent expelled the honor student from school for a year! The school officials claim they had no choice (zero tollerance laws) and now the officials are saying that the boy is making too much of the issue.

I think this is an example of rank stupidity and cowardice on the part of the school officials. Even if they thought the laws/rules gave them no choice, they should have the balls to defy the rule - and the brains to avoid the conflict in the first place. With such small minds at the helm of our schools is it any wonder the results of our public education are so poor?
