Thread Name: Tune Add: Catches = longer rounds
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Catches = longer rounds
I posted this in a thread of its own a few months ago, only because (for some reason) I couldn't find this thread. Now that I have found it, I'm putting it in its "proper place" ;-)

THE WISEMEN WERE BUT SEVEN -- a round for three voices by William Lawes, mid-17th Century

The wisemen were but seven, ne'er more shall be for me
The Muses were but nine, the worthies three time three
And three merry boys, and three merry boys, and three merry boys are we!

--- And now for my question: I know who the nine Muses are, and I know of three famous wisemen, but who are these seven wisemen, as revered in 17th century England? Any ideas?

Here are the midis for the three parts of the round --
