Talking it out is probably the best way. However if X was a friend then they would not gossip. If they had a problem with your behaviour then they should (if they were a true friend) in theory talk to you about it. People like that are not worth having as friends they will only hurt you and the people around them. They will undoubtedly lose their friends and those who are close to them.
