Thread Name: BS: Why do Americans need Guns now?
Subject: RE: Why do Americans need Guns now?
In response to Banjoest, the one who thinks I am one of the anti-gun nuts who joins the NRA just to quit, let me say this. You are correct that The American Rifleman always carries an article on gun safety and education, but those articles are invariably about how we can and do teach the INDIVIDUAL to handle firearms safely. When it comes to public policy, however, The Ameriacn Rifleman and the NRA oppose any and all legislative and regulatory intervention, no matter how moderate and well considered. That puts them in direct opposition to almost all organizations of law enforcement professionals. But maybe we can get away from the polemics for a moment and think analytically. The guns-kill-people versus people-kill-people is both simplistic and useless. What we have is a complex matrix of the individuals, the organized society, and the technology. What we need to do is come to an equitable and effective and ever-evolving way of dealing with that reality through the political processes of constitutional democracy. That being said, I must admit that posturing, bravado, and hurling slogans is much easier.
