This is a very interesting question, I wish I knew the answer.I've always thought of it as a Louis Armstrong quote, because that's who it was attributed to when I first heard it. There's a recent posting by someone or other that mentions a 1959 recording of Big Bill Broonzy saying it at a concert, so there's a start pointfor the discussion...anybody got an earlierdate? I'm pretty sure I read it in a book about jazz pulished pre-l959, but I can't find the book on my shelves so that's it as far as i'm coverned.
