Thread Name: Help: DT/Forum search problems
Subject: DT/Forum search hints
It was my impression that the index for the DigiTrad and Forum SuperSearch was last updated about September, 2001; but maybe I'm wrong on that. We haven't been able to develop an automated process for indexing, and it's a chore that gets forgotten. Spaw posted a pretty good list of search pointers just the other day, and I put a copy of his post toward the bottom of the FAQ thread. I see there is some confusion about which search engine to use for what, so I added some clarification to the search instructions in the first message of the FAQ. Here's a summary: - Generally, use the Forum Search to search by User Name or by Message Title. Jeff and I and the JoeClones try to rename messages to help in searching, and it's helpful if everybody takes the time to ensure that message titles are clear.
- Use the Filter to search the Forum by Thread Name. Again, Jeff and Jeri and I try to rename threads for clarity, to assist in searching. I also try to crosslink or consolidate threads, in cases when there is more than one thread on a given subject. Mudcatters can help by starting threads only when there is no existing thread on the subject; and by giving threads appropriate, clear names.*
- Use the Digitrad and Forum Search (Supersearch) to search the text of forum messages and Digital Tradition songs. As has been stated above, note that the SuperSearch depends on an index that has not been updated for several months, so recent messages won't turn up in your search results. We're still working on a way to automate the indexing process.
If you can't find something, post a message here or in the Help Forum. We're always happy to help. In fact, since the SuperSearch is behind the times on indexing, nobody can call you stupid if you can't find something....

*Occasionally, people cry "censorship" when we change thread titles or consolidate threads. Sorry, but that's the breaks. We generally leave the content of messages alone (threats, SPAM, and personal attacks are not allowed), but we feel an obligation to have a Forum Menu with clearly-named threads. People should not have to open a thread to know what's inside. We also can't allow multiple threads on the same suject to be running at the same time.
