The answer to your question Don, is because the team would lose! That guy "working the net" is also pretty good at narrowing angles, diving low (or high) in a hurry and handling the ball. If teams were likely to win games of football by frequently booting the the ball a long way down the pitch, then England would probably have won the World Cup several times. I'm afraid this hasn't been the case. I don't know about the US only liking winners at sport, however, if you look to your ladies team, you certainly have them - two World Cups on the trot. I am sure there are plenty of young US footballers who want to do their stuff on the world stage. I may well live to see a US team win the World CDup.
