Most of the books I have do not say "songs popular in Ireland" at all they most definitely say "Irish Folk songs" and include "The Rose of Allandale" (written by Charles Jeffrys) and always spelled wrongly as Allendale. Frederick Whetherley who wrote Danny Boy in 1911 was quite clearly thinking of Scotland when he wrote it. The song never became "Irish" until it was hi-jacked by Irish Americans like Bing Crosby in the 1920's and after.
