The song group itself has been discussed rather a lot here in the past, but to restrict myself to the sub-group in question, I'd comment only that Dan Tate was recorded again in 1979, by Mike Yates. Tate learned the song from his sister, and Yates speculates that she and Kilby Snow may have learned it from the same source. The refrain does seem to be unique to Virginia.
