In his liner notes for the Kilby Snow album, Mike Seeger quotes Snow, who says "By memory from Grandfather Thomas Snow as Tom Big Bear, a Cherokee Indian, born 1812, died 1916, age 104." Snow says that when he learned this song from his grandfather, he was "around 95 years old...I wasn't more than seven or eight years old...."
