I don't think you can just blame the Vikings for the no shame/berserk thing. The Ancient Brits and Gaels carefully removed their knickers before fighting too. Not sure about the Anglo-Saxons, I've never seen any references to that. Presumably the rationale was something to do with laundry bills, connected with any problems arising either during or immediately before the battle.
