Greg, I don't think anyone has mentioned the Skyline Drive, and on your way to Staunton you should do a bit of the Drive, it's quite lovely, even in August. Have lunch at Big Meadows and climb Hawksbill, or even better do the White Oak Canyon Trail and wear your bathing suit to sit in the falls.
