Thread Name: is folk music elitist?
Subject: RE: is folk music elitist?
I love the bit about being nailed to the door. As someone who is and has been a regular organiser/performer at the T & S singarounds I think I am well versed to reply. First the room can't cope (at night certainly) with floating folkies, there's barely enuff room for the regulars (although it is and was quieter in the afternoons. The notice was the landlady's idea and wording, perhaps in hindsight the wording was a bit wrong but how else does she ensure that the room is kept free for those who regularly attend and organise. It also keeps out ignorant and selfish musicians from annexing it (as happened last year). The T & S sing a round is a quality event, it may be elitist but hey it's a fecking good elite. Always remember that Folk Music could be classed as a heirarchical meritocracy and in in any heirachical meritro catic society someone has to be betterer and the T & S Sesh is the Mutts Nuts
