From what I remember in my research, "William Bonney" is the name he was tried under. I never was able to uncover why that name was used. Billy had already be through jail (I think more than once) and had killed before the Lincon County War. The problem in researching the subject is (as you pointed out) that the best books on Billy the Kid and "Brushy" Bill Roberts are now out of print.
