Thread Name: Lyr Add: The Little Thatched Cabin
Subject: Lyr Add: THE LITTLE THATCHED CABIN
The 'Irish Homestead' thread brought to mind this lovely emigrant song from Ireland. It does not appear to be in the DT.

THE LITTLE THATCHED CABIN
(Traditional)

It's well I remember that little thatched cabin
Where I first saw the light on a bright summer's morn
It stands on the hillside in view of the valley
It's that little thatched home where me father was born

I care not wherever in life I may wander
And I don't give a farthing for castle or hall
There's no home dearer to me than the old home
It's that little thatched home where me father was born

I've ploughed in the fields and I've mown in the meadows
I've cut turf on the bog through the long summer's day
By [but?] the lark o'er the green fields with his sweet note so charming
'twas sure to drive all grief and trouble away

I care not wherever in life I may wander
And I don't give a farthing for castle or hall
There's no home dearer to me than the old home
It's that little thatched home where me father was born

But I'm growing older and fortune is with me
When I think of my homeland it fills me with pain
And I'd give all the gold that I have in this wide world
To be back in that little thatched cabin again

I care not wherever in life I may wander
And I don't give a farthing for castle or hall
There's no home dearer to me than the old home
It's that little thatched home where me father was born

Tom Madden notes on the album sleeve that he learned the song from 'a fine Galway singer, Tony O'Halloran'.
