The conical hat was only popular in France for a few years, but it has become the visual symbol for anything mediaeval.... it is more popular now than when it was first worn! It's an extension of the 'flower pot' type seen in Britain during that same period (late mediaeval - 1300's). I prefer the earlier end, 1100's, where the headdresses were basically large squares of linen wrapped around the head in whatever manner you liked that would stay on and keep your head covered. As for the dress, it's the only dress I ever wear now, but somehow I don't think the Inland Revenue is ready for that, so I will continue to wear my trousers.Strange this effect that Hazel has on people's lives....
