CHEROKEE BOOGIE (EH-OH-ALEENA)
(Moon Mullican & Chief William Redbird, 1951)
Oh, Cherokee chief as he dances along,
He sings an Indian boogie to a white man's song.
CHORUS: Sayin', "Eh-oh-aleena," sayin', "eh-oh-aleena,"
Sayin', "Eh-oh-aleena, oh-oh na-wich-ee-na-eh".
Well, he dances over here and he dances over there,
And he's dancin' with a squaw called Standin' Bear. CHORUS
Well, he dances in a trot and he dances in a walk,
But he keeps on shakin' his old tomahawk. CHORUS
Now, he sings a little soft and he sings a little loud,
And his tom-tom beats, "Oh, Chief Blue Cloud." CHORUS
He's a Cherokee chief, as you all might know,
When he sings his boogie, sayin', "Na-wan-yo." CHORUS
[Recorded by Moon Mullican, Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, Asleep at the Wheel, BR5-49, and others.]
Variants found at other sites:
Well, he dances over here and he dances over there
And he keeps on a dancin' everywhere
Well, he dances on the hill and he dances on the rock
But he keeps on shaking that tomohawk
Well, he sings to the hills and he sings to the clouds
And he keeps on singin' so big and proud
Now, he sings a little soft and he sings a little loud
And his tom-tom beating so big and proud
