I don't know what he means by it, but it reminds me of a riddle that I read about in a folklore dictionary once, that, if I recall correctly, came from ancient Greece:

What has nine holes, that when eight holes are sealed, one is open, and whe the eight are open, the one is sealed?

Hint: it's a cousin to the Sphinx's riddle...
